The diverse nature of the region lends itself to a wide cross section of economic, social and sporting activities and lifestyle options for residents, tourists and business interests.

Port Pirie found its name from the first schooner to stop off at the Port and load sheep in 1845 – the “John Pirie”. The port was initially established to export local produce of grain, sheep and wool from the productive hinterland. The first railway link was established in 1875. Port Pirie is home to the worlds largest lead smelter “Nystar” which has been producing and exporting lead, zinc, silver and copper for over 100 years.
